When I was a relatively new Christian, I was asked what I thought my primary fruit of the Spirit was. My answer was faithfulness. I believe that the Bible is true and that everything written in it is the Word is God. I still do. But at that point, I had not put it all together – faith and works.
When I did something for someone, I was looking for their approval and praise. And, I couldn’t apply God’s truth to myself and still felt unworthy and alone. As I continued growing, the two connected more and more. My faith grew, and I was able to see my worth in God. My works continued, but as a response to caring for others and not a way to make myself feel better.
James warns us that we can not have one without the other – faith and works go hand in hand. If we say we have faith but never lift a hand in service of God or others, are we following Christ’s example? If we do good things for others to gain glory for ourselves, that is the only reward we will receive.
God wants to be an intragal part of our lives. He wants us to understand His heart for us and for others. He has designed us for community that we may come together as members of His family. We are called to good works towards each other while keeping God the center of our all.
Faith and works should, together, bring glory to God.
