Words matter. What you say matters. The illustration that I remember is about a child who was angry a lot and would say mean things and then quickly say sorry. His father told him to go to the fence with a hammer and nails and pound the nails into the wood. The father explained that the nails were like the mean things he would say.
The child explained that he would always say he was sorry, so that should fix things. The father had the child, then go out to the fence and pull out all of the nails. After the child pulled out all of the nails, the father had him look at the holes that were created. The fence would never be the same. Removing the nails is like saying you’re sorry. There will still be lasting effects.
God cares for us and for our hearts. When we let course language and hurtful words come out of our mouths, they started in our hearts first. They can make our hearts calloused and hard. There are many warnings in the Bible to not harden our hearts. But when we choose to continue to speak hurtful things, we are actively going against God.
God loves us unconditionally. He cares for us and gave us His only Son that we might be saved for our sins. He speaks life over us and provides the Holy Spirit to be our encourager. In the same manner, we should speak life and encouragement to others.
