have plenty of practice at having to forgive. Sometimes, it’s small things, and sometimes, it has been life-changing, all-consuming things. I forgive for several reasons. God tells me to. I have been forgiven even more through Christ. I want peace in my heart.
People hurt people. They hurt them physically and/ or emotionally. We have all been hurt by someone. For some people, the hurt is so deep that it leads to unforgiveness. Unforgiveness leads to bitterness and anger in our hearts. It can destroy our happiness and peace. Forgiveness is less about the other person and more about our own heart.
Jesus tells us that if we forgive, we will be forgiven by God. This is a strong if/then comparison. It places responsibility on us to forgive in order to be forgiven. When we accept Christ, our sins are forgiven because He had paid the price for them. So why is there this caveat?
As Christians, we have been forgiven a debt that we could never pay through Jesus. In turn, we need to see others as Christ sees us. The people who hurt us are image-bearers of God. They may or may not know Christ. But, whatever the offense, forgiveness frees us, not them. It puts us in right standing with God and allows Him to heal our hurt.
God calls us to forgive for our own peace.
