In a world that demands we have more and need more, contentment is hard to find. Between advertisements and influencers, the options are endless of new products. Then, just look at those around you and what they have. The message is never be content. You need more.
What if we decided that the bowl we had worked just fine and we didn’t need another one in a different color? What if fixing something became the norm instead of buying new? Comparison kills joy. It disregards what we do have and creates jealousy and strife.
Contentment is a gift from God. It is not just not wanting more but being grateful for what we have. It is recognizing that everything we have is a gift from God. He supplies our needs. He cares for us, and everything we truly need is found in Him.
Paul tells Timothy to pair contentment with godliness. Don’t be content in sin and unrighteousness. This is where a lot of our culture lands. Contentment with separation from God leads to hell. But we need to seek God, walk in His ways, and find joy in the life He has given us. That is where true contentment and great gain are found.
