Get Out of My Way

I was behind a car at a stop light the other day. The arrow turned green and the car in front of me didn’t move. She had her window down and was carrying on a conversation with the car next to her. I honked, and she slowly moved into the intersection, still talking. I revved my engine as the arrow turned yellow and then red. I finally got through the intersection and sped around her. She waved at me with just one finger.

I have no idea what the conversation was about. I assumed something trival and only saw the inconvenience to me. What if her child was in the hospital and she was sharing the news because she saw her friend? It could have been something life shattering. It would have cost me nothing to show kindness instead of frustration. I certainly did not show Jesus.

Our sinful nature demands that we focus on ourselves and help ourselves. God’s Spirit helps us to see the people that God has placed in our paths and to see beyond ourselves. It is a constant struggle, but with the power of the Spirit working in us, we can continue to grow and walk in the ways God’s has planned for us.

God is so good. He has designed us to be part of a community. He calls us to see and serve others. God works out His plans through His people. As Christ gave Himself up for us, we are to give up our selfishness and consider others more significant than ourselves.

May the Holy Spirit work mightily in you and through you.
