I started a gratitude jar. I would set out pieces of paper each day for each person in my house. By the end of the day, you had to write one thing that you were grateful for. My son would say that he couldn’t think of anything. So I would offer him a list of things like a warm house and food in the refrigerator.
There is so much to be thankful for even in the hard times. God is working all things for our good. When I broke my leg, I told the doctor that God would use it and He did. During that time, He removed things from my life that needed to be removed. He allowed me rest that I would have never given myself. So, I was grateful for my broken leg.
God is working intricately in our lives. There is not a moment that is overlooked or unnoticed. Everything that happens happens for a reason. We just need to slow down and look for God. When we are overwhelmed and can’t see God in the storm, we can look for the small glimpses of hope.
Turning our hearts to thankfulness can be difficult. But in each day, there are reasons to praise God for who He is and what He had provided. Perhaps it can be as simple as food to eat, or perhaps it can be as dramatic as a broken leg. God cares for His children in everything and calls us to see Him in our circumstances.
Thank God for the small things and the big things.
