Sweet as Honey

I had been in a restaurant and stepped in front of a man who was younger than I was. I said, “I am sorry, sir.” He was so offended that I called him sir. I try to always be respectful, so I use sir or ma’am a lot because words matter.

Thank you, please and your welcome seem to be fewer and far between. Even fewer are grace-filled words. Words that demonstrate more than common courtesy. Things like, I see you. I understand. I hurt for you. These are the words that bind wounds and heal the soul. May grace fail from your lips as honey drips from the comb.

God cares about our words because they have the power of life and death. Gracious words are desirable and pleasant. Crude and harsh words tear down a soul. God calls us to guard our words carefully. If we would not say it in front of Jesus, we should not say it at all.

We need to watch what words we speak over ourselves as well. Are we tearing ourselves down, or are we speaking gracious words into our own souls? Where there should be sweetness, we oftentimes speak bitterness and shame. God calls us to be gracious to ourselves as well as others.

What words are you speaking to yourself?
