I had to go back into Isaiah to see who this promise was for. He is speaking to the Israelites who have been fasting but not actually doing the other commands of God. They have neglected actually taking care of their fellow man, but instead, they have oppressed people and left them hungry.
How often do we come before God and expect that He should answer our prayers when we are not following Him? Instead, we need to ask God to reveal the sin in us first. We need to face our own wanderings and address them with God. God’s promises can be withheld when sin is in the way.
Lately, I have been visiting people more people than I would like to in hospitals, nursing homes and hospice. For some of them, this promise was fulfilled as they walked into the arms of Jesus. For others, they will never regain enough strength to have strong bones. However, God’s word and prayer can refresh their soul and strengthen theirs spirits.
Once we examine ourselves before God, His living water can flow into our lives. The dry places of our souls can be refreshed even when our bodies wither. So, in times of despair or desperation, we need to turn our eyes inward and then upward.
Our strength rests in the arms of a God who loves us.
