Joy + Peace = Hope

I had gone on a missions trip to Kansas City when I was seven months pregnant. One of the projects we had was to help a church member clean a rental property they owned. It was in bad shape. My task was the bathroom, which was gross.

The owners were a young couple. The wife pulled up in her Mercedes to drop something off. She smiled and said she would love to help but she was pregnant so she couldn’t. That night, we were asked where we found joy that day. I admitted to struggling because I was angry at the couple. Neither of them participated.

We choose joy. We choose to focus on God and what He is doing rather than our circumstances. Sometimes, our circumstances can cause us to be bitter. When we let bitterness take over, we won’t choose joy. It is just about impossible. Our eyes become fixed on ourselves.

God is the God of joy and hope. With the power of the Holy Spirit, we can abound in hope. When we cling to anger, we quench the Holy Spirit. We can’t find joy until we are willing to let go of the bitterness. It is there that hope can arise and joy fill our hearts.

May God fill you with all joy and peace.
