Don’t Panic

I am not claustrophobic but I can tell you that a trip into an MRI machine can make even the best of us panic. Between the not being able to move and the noise, one’s mind can begin to race. There can become a point of panic where your body says it can’t take it anymore.

That’s where I was after 40 minutes of imaging. I had been doing fine with my eyes closed. But when I opened my eyes, I could see my nose barely an inch below the tube. My body wanted to escape. It felt unsafe and became upsetting. I calmed myself down and was able to remain still.

God calls us not to a physical stillness but to a mental stillness. We can be fairly comfortable with the idea that God is in control and that He loves us. But if we open our eyes to everything going on around us, it can feel like everything is actually out off control. We can panic.

Be still is used throughout the Bible. God knows our thoughts. He knows what is going on in the world. The Psalmist reminds us of the promise that nothing is out of the control of God. Every knee will bow at the name of Jesus. There will be moments of panic but focusing on God will bring us back to His peace and stillness.

When things are out of control, seek the One who is in control.
