Have you ever read “The 5 Love Languages”? In the books, it talks about how we express love to each other. Generally, we express love in the way that we want to receive it. But, we can have different “love” languages. So, we may think we are doing a good thing but it doesn’t resonate the same with the other person.
We often will want people to reciprocate to us what we have given to them. We give with an expectation of having the same done for us. Jesus even says it here. Love one another at I have loved you. The deep love He demonstrated for us, He wants us to demonstrate to others in the church.
Love one another is a different love than love your neighbor. The “one another’s” are specifically members of the church, other believers. Loving our neighbors isn’t the deep love that Jesus is talking about. This type of sacrificial love is for those who call Him Lord.
Jesus asks us to be one body, united in Him. Understanding all that we have received through Christ, creates a deep connection and realization of the true cost of our sin. We are wretched creatures that have been rescued from hell by the love of our Savior. That’s the kind of love we are to show.
How can your love look more like Jesus’s?
