The “love” chapter from 1 Corinthians is often read at weddings. It tells us all about how love is supposed to be. I tell my children to look at people that they are dating and use this list to identify if the person they are with stands up to the list. Are they patience and kind? Or, are they arrogant or proud?
No one can be all of these things but if there is love, they should strive for them. There should be a desire to set aside our selfishness for the other person. Love is and isn’t the traits listed here. When we love, we give of ourselves for the good of the other.
God is love. The list in chapter 13 isn’t just for us but it reveals God’s character. God is patient. He waits for us to turn to Him. He is kind. He provides us with all that we need and gives common grace to everyone. Things like rain, sun, food, etc…even if someone rejects Him.
God is not proud or arrogant. The very Creator of the universe gave up everything to become man and walk on the earth. Jesus humbled Himself, knowingly suffering hardship and even death that we might be saved. Jesus didn’t come to condemn the world but to save it.
Spend some time in chapter 13 and think about God and His character.
