I have struggled with bouts of depression through my life. Times where I would get into my head and listen to all the negative things about myself. It’s a place that can suck you in like quicksand. It’s a dark place that is suffocating.
Even since becoming a Christian, I have slipped into these dark places and wanted to stay there. It is torment but also familiar. It often seems too strong to break free from. I felt alone, unseen and unloved. All which were not true.
Jesus is light. He breaks strongholds with His words. He tears down the walls we have built up that keep us in the darkness. Even if it is a prison of our own construction, Jesus wants us to be free of it. And, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can break away from it’s grip.
We need to fan into flame the Spirit with prayer and reading the Word of God. By filling ourselves with light-giving truth, we can beat back the darkness and truly love in the light. Ephesians references the helmet of salvation. Keeping our thoughts on who Jesus is and what He has done will help us to see how deeply we are loved.
Darkness is vanquished by the light.
